Thompson is a town of nearly 10,000 residents and spans 48 square miles in northeastern Connecticut. Named for Sir Robert Thompson, the town is known for the Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, the highest-banked racetrack in New England. Thompson is made up of 10 villages: East & West Thompson, Thompson Hill, Fabyan, Grosvenordale, North Grosvenordale, Mechanicsville, Quaddick, Quinebaug, and Wilsonville. The town is served by a K–12 public school system.
West Thompson Dam and Lake, located in the town, offer a vast recreational area managed by Park Rangers. Constructed in 1965 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the dam created West Thompson Lake, a 200-acre body of water within a 1,857-acre park. The area provides a wide range of activities, including hiking, camping, boating, and disc golf. West Thompson Lake is rich in natural resources and supports diverse habitats, landscapes, plant life, and wildlife, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families.
