Nestled in Northeast Connecticut’s beautiful “Quiet Corner,” the 314-year-old Town of Canterbury offers a rich mix of historical tradition, a wide variety of tradespeople and small businesses, unique ecological features, and beautiful vistas across its 40.3 square miles. A current population of 5,088 lives along 68 miles of Town Roads and 20 miles of State Roads. Canterbury is also home to local outdoor spaces such as Robert Manship Park and the Kinne Preserve, which provide residents with opportunities to enjoy nature and recreation.
Elementary and middle schools are located within the town, while high school students have a choice of Board of Education–approved high schools that offer a broad spectrum of educational opportunities. A wide range of active and involved civic groups and community services provide many recreational and educational activities throughout the town.
Canterbury is also home to the historic Prudence Crandall Museum, which continues to educate not only local children but also visitors from across the state. The museum honors the legacy of Prudence Crandall’s school, the first private school for African American girls, which opened in 1833.
